The minimum is 8% of qualifying earnings (at least 3% from the employer, 5% from the employee under auto-enrolment). Most financial planners suggest 15% of gross salary as a target for a comfortable retirement if starting at 25–30. The older you start, the higher the contribution rate needed to reach the same pot size.
Enter your current pot value, monthly employee and employer contributions, current age, target retirement age, annual growth rate (default 5%) and inflation (default 2.5%). The calculator compounds contributions and growth annually, then shows the projected pot, 25% tax-free lump sum and estimated annual income from the remaining 75% over a 20-year drawdown period.
It depends entirely on contributions and starting age. Contributing £400 a month from age 30 with 5% a year growth reaches about £514,000 by 67 (about £204,000 in today's money after 2.5% inflation). Starting at 40, the same £400 a month reaches about £274,000. Use the calculator to model your exact scenario.
