What's inside

Check your pay is right, then claim what you're owed

Your take-home figure is only right if your tax code is right. The pack starts there, then works through the reliefs people most often miss and shows you how to put things right with HMRC.

Decode your tax code

A full reference for 1257L, L, M, N, BR, D0/D1, 0T, K, NT, the W1/M1/X emergency codes and the S and C prefixes.

Check your payslip

What every payslip line tells you, a list of warning signs, and a worksheet to compare your payslip with the calculator.

Emergency tax, two jobs and pensions

Why new starters often overpay, how an allowance gets split badly between two jobs, how the State Pension uses up your code, and how overpaid tax comes back.

Money you may be owed

Marriage Allowance, job expenses and mileage, backdated working-from-home claims, and higher-rate pension relief.

The traps and the deductions

Student loan overpayments, savings and dividend tax in your code, the £100,000 trap and the Child Benefit charge.

Fix it with HMRC, yourself

Step by step through your Personal Tax Account, the four-year limit, what to do if you've underpaid, six worked examples, a claim tracker and where to get free help.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What exactly do I get?

A 28-page PDF, the PAYE Tax Code & Refund Check Pack for the 2026/27 tax year (Edition 2.1, checked against official sources on 18 October 2026). You download it straight after payment and keep it. The link works for 30 days.

Is this a tax refund service?

No. We don't contact HMRC for you and we don't take a cut of anything you're owed. The pack shows you how to check your tax code and make any claims yourself, directly with HMRC, for free.

Will it tell me if my tax code is wrong?

It shows you how to read your code and payslip, lists the common reasons codes go wrong, and gives you a worksheet to compare your payslip with the calculator. Only HMRC can change your code; the pack explains how to ask them.

Does it cover Scotland and Wales?

Yes. The main tables are for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and page 3 also gives the 2026/27 Scottish bands. It explains the S and C prefixes and the Scottish SBR and SD codes, and the reliefs and HMRC steps are UK-wide.

Is it personal tax advice?

No. It is general information about the PAYE system. For decisions that depend on your wider finances, such as large pension contributions, speak to a qualified adviser.
